These 2 major Phoenix-area freeways will be closed this weekend

Phoenix-area motorists are advised to keep their eyes peeled for planned weekend road closures starting Sept. 19.

"Drivers should allow extra travel time and plan on using detour routes as needed while the following weekend restrictions are in place," a statement from the Arizona Department of Transportation read.

There will be two freeway closures scheduled on Phoenix-area freeways this weekend, according to ADOT. There are other freeway restrictions or ramp closures planned as well.

Inclement weather or other factors may lead to schedule changes, ADOT said. The department plans and constructs new freeways, additional lanes and other improvements in the Phoenix area as part of the Regional Transportation Plan for the Maricopa County region.

Eastbound Interstate 10

When: 9 p.m. Sept. 19 to 5 a.m. Sept. 21

Where: Eastbound Interstate 10 between the Interstate 17 "Stack" interchange and the State Route 51 "Mini-Stack" interchange near downtown Phoenix will be closed.

Why: Scheduled maintenance.

Detour: Eastbound I-10 traffic approaching the closure can detour on southbound I-17 and reconnect with I-10 at the "Split" interchange near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

Weekend freeway travel advisory for Friday, Sept. 19, through Monday, Sept. 22, 2025.

Westbound US 60 (Superstition Freeway)

Where: The southbound/eastbound Loop 202 (South Mountain Freeway) will be narrowed to one lane between Vee Quiva Way and 17th Avenue.

Why: Pavement maintenance.

Detour: Motorists should allow for extra travel time and expect to slow down and merge when traveling through the work zone.

Westbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway)

When: 10 p.m. Sept. 19 to 10 a.m. Sept. 20; 8 p.m. Sept. 20 to 10 a.m. Sept. 21

Where: The right two lanes of the Westbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) will be closed between Gilbert and Cooper roads. The westbound Loop 202 on-ramp at Gilbert and the westbound off-ramp at Cooper will be closed.

Why: Widening project.
