The BMW M2 CS Will Be The Fastest M2 Ever

The oracle for all things BMW, Bimmerpost user "ynguldyn," has posted some updates about upcoming models. The update includes information about the BMW M2's more serious CS variant. In addition to being the most powerful M2 ever, it will have the highest top speed, and it will receive upgrades to the chassis and suspension to make it lighter and more lithe.

Less Weight, Lower Height, More Speed

The biggest news from ynguldyn's post is the top speed of the M2 CS. It will reportedly hit 188 mph. That's 33 more than a base M2, and 11 more than an M2 with the M Driver's Package. The previous M2 CS topped out at 174 mph, so the new M2 CS will comfortably take the speed crown for the model line.

The CS will lose weight, too. The leaked information says the CS will lose 66 pounds over the regular M2. Using the automatic M2 as a reference point, since the CS will almost certainly use an 8-speed automatic to handle the additional power and torque, the CS should weigh around 3,748 pounds. Much of the weight savings will probably come from including optional carbon fiber parts for the regular M2, such as the roof and front seats, as standard.

Finally, BMW will also upgrade the suspension on the CS. The only detail to leak, though, is how low it will be. Compared to a regular M2, the CS will sit 0.31 inch closer to the ground. It's safe to assume that the spring rates will have changed, and the adaptive M shocks will have been retuned to match.

Everything Else We Know

From past reports, including updates from ynguldyn, we know that the M2 CS will be the most powerful M2 yet. Power is expected to reach 525 horsepower, which is 52 more than the standard M2 and 81 more than the previous-generation M2 CS. This is the reason the new CS will certainly use the automatic, as it's the only transmission for the high-torque version of the regular M2. Because of the big gain in horsepower, we've been wondering whether the CS would also adopt all-wheel drive. On the M4 Competition, the rear-drive version makes 504 horsepower, and the all-wheel-drive version makes 523 horsepower. Until we hear for sure, though, we're expecting rear-wheel drive to be available on the CS.

Spy shots have shown us that the CS will get unique styling features to stand out from regular M2s. The front bumper has been revised with different intakes and a deeper front spoiler. At the rear, the trunk gets a duck-tail spoiler.

We'll know all the M2 CS details soon. BMW is supposed to reveal it this August, and it should go on sale soon after. In addition to being the most powerful M2 available, the CS will undoubtedly be the most expensive. No pricing information has leaked, but if the previous version is anything to go by, the CS could cost more than $80,000, which is a big jump over the roughly $65,000 base price of the M2.
