Yesterday, Toyota released teasers of concepts it will debut at the Japan Mobility Show (JMS), which will kick off on October 29. Included with them is a new GR-branded supercar, but those hoping to see it at the Tokyo event will have to wait a little longer.
In the company’s “five brands” announcement livestream, chairman Akio Toyoda hinted that we can expect to see the car, called the GR GT, sometime at the end of the year, ahead of the Tokyo Auto Salon in January. A countdown on the Toyota Gazoo Racing website shows that a reveal will happen in 52 days on December 5.
As previously reported, the car was previewed at the Goodwood Festival of Speed by the camouflaged GT Concept – an extremely long-nosed, cab-rearward coupé bearing a striking resemblance to the old Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. The sole teaser image of the production model lines up with the prototype, sporting the same sharp headlights joined by a gloss black bar, an X-shaped bumper design and large air intakes.
Toyota also played the engine sound during the livestream, suggesting the car will be fitted with a powerful, high-revving V8 engine, likely with twin turbos to match the power outputs of rivals such as the Mercedes-AMG GT. The car is also set to spawn a Lexus version, as previewed by the Lexus Sport Concept at The Quail in Monterrey, California.
The GR GT will join the GR stand at the Tokyo Auto Salon, where the performance sub-brand will make a big announcement alongside other new cars. Could we see Gazoo Racing being spun off into a separate entity like Lexus is? May we perhaps see cars like the long-rumoured Celica and MR2? Only time will tell.
