Quite a few surprises here. You see, where the monthly top 20 car models are concerned, according to the road transport department’s (JPJ) data, it’s been Bezza-Axia-Myvi 1-2-3 for as long as we can remember.
Not this time. For September, the Proton Saga was Malaysia’s second best-selling car (it’s usually fourth)! We should note that at 5,717 units sold within the month, the Saga is actually performing normally; its rise to second is due to Perodua’s month-on-month drop (the Bezza-Axia-Myvi triumvirate did 6,733, 5,689 and 4,521 units respectively in September, down from August’s 9,533, 7,525 and 6,514).
Another big surprise also comes from Proton – this is very possibly the first time an EV has entered the monthly top 20 when it comes to car models, regardless of propulsion method. Yes, the eMas 7 was Malaysia’s 19th best-selling car in September (757 units), just 89 units shy of the Honda Civic’s 846. A sign of an EV truly breaking into the mainstream?
Everything else is where you’d expect – the Alza is still the country’s No 1 MPV (3,149 units in September), the X50 the top SUV (3,103, nearly 900 units ahead of the Ativa), and the Vios and Yaris (3,148 combined) trounces the Honda City sedan and hatchback (1,548 units combined).
Now how does 2025 look like so far? As usual, the Saga’s the only thing denying Sungai Choh a straight 1-5 sweep; the Aruz is the hikikomori at 16th, with only 10,366 sold year-to-date (YTD) September. Perodua’s total is now 255,094, so it’s 89,906 units away from its 345,000-unit 2025 sales target (average of 30,000 sales a month needed over October, November and December). Is the EV going to come and help?
Keep an eye on the X50, for it’s getting dangerously close to the Vios – YTD September, less than 2,000 units separate them. Will the nasi lemak SUV overtake the sushi sedan before the curtains close on 2025?
