'The Mechanic Just Wants My Money:' Mechanic Tells California Woman It’s $30 to Check Code. So She Goes to AutoZone Instead

A California woman went viral on TikTok after revealing the “hack” she used to avoid what she saw as unnecessary repair fees.

Ashley Lynn (@xoxo.ashleylynn) says her local mechanic tried to charge her $30 to hook her car up to a machine that would read its codes and identify the issue.

She couldn’t understand why she’d have to pay for something so simple. According to Lynn, AutoZone offers the same service for free. So, instead of paying the mechanic, she headed to AutoZone and used one of the store’s diagnostic tools to figure out what was wrong with her car.

“The mechanic just wants my money,” she says in the clip.

As of this writing, her video has garnered more than 40,000 views and elicited numerous reactions from people who say they hadn’t realized AutoZone would run the same test at no cost.

How Did AutoZone Help?

Lynn turned her experience into a PSA for drivers trying to save on basic car diagnostics.

“Just a reminder that mechanics charge just to read your car’s codes when you could just come to AutoZone and ask to use their OBD reader for free,” she says in her video.

She explains that after using the code reader, all you have to do is bring it back inside, where an AutoZone employee will print out a list of everything that might be wrong. In her case, a worker told her the issue seemed to be her battery—a diagnosis that made sense, given that her check engine light was on.

To confirm it, Lynn visited another AutoZone, where staff ran a battery test for free. She ended up buying a replacement battery there for $250, although it’s unclear whether she installed it herself or received help from the store. Either way, she says she saved money by skipping the mechanic altogether.

Is This Free AutoZone Hack Legitimate?

The short answer is yes—AutoZone really does offer free code readings for your car. Anyone can walk into a store, ask for help, and an employee will come outside with a handheld scanner to check your vehicle. The service is known as the Fix Finder, and it’s available at all AutoZone locations across the U.S.

Here’s how it works. You show up during regular business hours and ask an employee to run a check. They’ll grab the scanner, plug it into a small port beneath your steering wheel, and have you turn your key to the “on” position. Within seconds, the device reads your car’s computer and pulls up any trouble codes that might explain your issue.

Once the scan is done, the employee goes back inside and prints out a report that lists the codes, possible causes, and suggested fixes. It’s completely free, with no obligation to purchase parts or pay for repairs.

AutoZone also offers a few other complimentary services that make it easy to diagnose car issues without spending money at a mechanic. He company will test your battery, starter, and alternator for free, and if you need a specialty tool to finish a repair yourself, its Loan-A-Tool program lets you borrow one with a refundable deposit.

So, Lynn’s video wasn’t a scam or a lucky loophole. AutoZone’s Fix Finder is a legitimate service meant to help drivers understand what’s wrong with their cars before they spend hundreds of dollars at a repair shop.

Viewers Thank Woman For Sharing Free AutoZone Hack

Lynn’s video struck a chord with TikTok viewers, many of whom said they had no idea AutoZone offered free diagnostic services. Some thanked her for the tip, calling it a genuine money-saver.

“Thanks for this,” one woman wrote.

Another echoed the sentiment, adding, “Thanks for sharing, babe.”

But not everyone was convinced the hack was all that helpful. Several commenters pointed out that while AutoZone’s code reader can identify problems, it doesn’t always tell you how to fix them.

“Code doesn’t mean [expletive] if you don’t know what to do with it,” one person wrote.

Another agreed, explaining, “AutoZone only gives you the code, and it lists POSSIBLE fixes for you that more than likely aren’t the problem. One time, the test told me that the likely fix for a P0420 would be the rear catalytic converter, but when I took my car to my mechanic, he told me it was a faulty O2 sensor.”

Others chimed in with their own low-cost workarounds.

“You can also buy [a code reader] for 20 bucks from Walmart,” one person suggested.

Another added, “Buy one of those code readers for 20 bucks on Amazon, you can do it yourself.”

Some commenters even expanded on Lynn’s “hack,” offering tips for saving money beyond diagnostics.

“Next time, buy a battery from Costco,” one viewer wrote. “During the term, keep the receipt. Once it dies, return it with the receipt, and they will replace it for free. But if the price increases during that time, you pay the difference.”

Another added, “[At] some places like Walmart, you can buy a car battery and get a lifetime warranty! Life hack, lol, now every time after that you need a new battery, you get it free.”

Motor1 has reached out to Lynn via a direct message on TikTok.
