Subaru Outbacks are known for their versatility, storage, and comfort. So, when a Subaru Outback is suggested for a car to sleep in, it checks out.

In a TikTok that’s generated over 13,800 views as of this writing, That Fox With a Subaru Outback (@thisfox999666) showcases why the Subaru Outback is a great car to fall asleep in.

What Makes the Subaru Outback a Good Car to Sleep In?

“Sleeping in the car really isn’t that bad,” the content creator begins.

The TikToker acknowledges that there are horror stories involving pain and suffering, but his situation isn’t too bad.

He then reveals his Subaru Outback setup that makes him comfortable sleeping in his car.

He starts by always locking the doors before doing anything else, as safety is essential.

He then proceeds to show the next step, which gets rid of foggy windows. He says his windows fog every morning, so he’ll crack one window in the front and back on the same side to reduce the fog.

Now that the car is locked and air flow into the car is secured, he shows where he sleeps.

“Now, this is how I lay,” he says.

He reveals his setup in the back of the Subaru Outback as he lays down horizontally.

“I mean, this is why Subaru Outbacks are amazing, especially if you are homeless,” he shares.

Getting to the back of the Outback to get into his sleeping position was easy, he says. All he needed to do was climb over the center console and shift around some possessions to clear up space to lie down.

@thisfox999666 told Motor1, “I have been homeless for 3 years and my adopted mom helped me get my beautiful Subaru Outback Legacy. I got it from a used car dealership, I fell in love with it. I am 6 foot 1 and I usually get cold at night because I live in Idaho. The Subaru has helped me during the nights.”

As he mentions, being 6 feet 1 inch in height can make it challenging to find comfort in vehicles. Fortunately for him, the Subaru Outback has enough room to accommodate his height, making him believe the Outback is one of the best cars to sleep in.

How to Safely Sleep In a Car

According to the Sleep Foundation, creating a comfortable environment is essential for sleeping in your car. The Foundation also provides these tips:

  • Decrease the Noise: Outside noise, traffic, and other people can be distracting when trying to sleep. Using ear plugs, a white noise machine, or playing soft music can aid the situation.
  • Keep the Car Cool: Crack one of the windows or the sunroof to get airflow going while sleeping.
  • Recline the Seat or Lay Down: Sleeping upright may lead to waking up frequently during the night. The more horizontal, the better for the head and neck to promote solid sleep.
  • Use a Pillow: Pillows offer support to the neck and head area and help the body relax.

Additionally, it’s also recommended to find ways to quiet the mind down for sleeping. It’s suggested to breathe deeply, meditate, read a book, listen to music, or drink a warm non-caffeinated beverage to calm down.

Sleeping in your car can be stressful, so implementing these tips can help the mind and body become more comfortable.

Is It Illegal to Sleep In Your Car?

Sleeping in your car is not illegal; however, there are restrictions, Jackery reports. These restrictions depend on the local laws in the area where you park your car to sleep.

Generally speaking, the best options to safely sleep in your car are at rest stops, private property (with permission), public land, and Walmart parking lots. With any of these, it’s important to check signage and local laws before posting up and taking a snooze.

While it’s not fully illegal to sleep in your car, in some states you’ll need to be more cautious about it. These states include California, Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Texas, New Jersey, Missouri, and Tennessee.
